Don’t Trust Everything Mark Zuckerburg Allegedly Announces
Posted on February 10th, 2011 No comments
I like Facebook. Really. But every now and then I do not like it. Every now and then I get a dubious posting on my wall about the latest Facebook app or issue. Sometimes, they’re downright dangerous.
For example, just today one of my friends had this on their post:
Mark Zuckerberg – Official Announcement.
The owner of Facebook announced that all the UNVERIFIED accounts will get DELETED. To keep using your Facebook account, you MUST VERIFY your account NOW (followed by a shortened link that you will regret clicking)If you click the link, you get a Facebook “Request for Permission” that grants an app called “Account Verification” the rights to all your precious Facebook data and friends list. You did not verify your account; you were just tricked into giving away your Facebook profile data.
This is not the first such scheme; there are many. Like the one about “who’s viewing your profile?” It’s a scam just like this one.
What to do when you get a solicitation like this from a friend? Glad you asked!
- Google the claim made by the post. It won’t take a lot of searching to see if it’s a scam.
- Use the “Report App” link to let Facebook know it’s bogus.
- Post under the item that it’s a scam. Your friend may or may not know, nor may your friend know they posted this. This is how spam works. If your friend is offended, they needed to be.
- Block the app by clicking the “X” on the post and selecting “Block (application name)”
Be careful what you believe…. and click.

Happy Conficker Day!
Posted on May 1st, 2009 No commentsApril 1, 2009. An unassuming day, April Fool’s, of course–until it is revealed the Conficker worm is going to “go off” that day. Some malware was in wide circulation on the internet, taking advantage of a Windows vulnerability, or “hole.” Microsoft released the patch for the “hole” in October 2008. Most users remained unpatched. Computing professionals like myself braced ourselves for what would happen… which was mostly…Nothing.
Was this a good thing? Did we dodge a bullet? It was a far cry from May 2000, when the “I Love You” virus hit the internet. I was helping a customer in the midst of the virus’s effects when I happened to call home and tell my wife about it. Right before I called, she received the email with the payload. Yes, she double-clicked it. Yes, we lost a few digital pictures that day. Most of all, we learned about zero-day threats, threats in the wild but not corrected or patched. We also learned that human behavior cannot be modified by an antivirus program.
Now, email is no longer the threat. “Drive-by” malware can infect you just be visiting a malicious site. Root kits bury themselves past efforts to detect them on your computer. Hackers are not trying to ruin your day, they’re looking to steal your identity.
My advice? Glad you asked….
- Use a good (no, GREAT) internet security suite. I love Norton Internet Security or Norton 360. Keep its virus signatures up to date. Schedule a complete system scan once a week. Use the firewall in the product.
- If you need a free product, I suggest AVG Free (http://www.avg.com/free) and Windows’ built-in firewall.
- Keep your Windows system patches up to date. Usually, Microsoft releases patches on Wednesday. Set Windows (on My Computer, right-click Properties, Windows Update tab) to download patches and install in the wee hours of the morning.
- Watch where you surf. Use the phishing philter in Internet Explorer (or Norton Internet Security) to detech fraudulent websites. Be very careful where you use your credit card; make sure the 128-bit security icon (usually a lock) displays when entering payment data. Some browsers may be better than others, but it comes down to WHERE YOU CHOOSE TO SURF.
Happy Conficker Day! I Love You. Send all your money to a needy Nigerian.

Posted on May 1st, 2004 No commentsYou may have noticed it’s been TWO YEARS since Stoutsite’s been updated. Ouch. One could ask the question, “Why?” We at Stoutsite.com have attempted to answer that question. Here they are, the Top Ten Excuses for Not Updating Your Website….Number 10:
The dog ate my latest AOL CD
9:
The dog regurgitated my latest AOL CD… on my computer
8:
The phrase “content is everything” is overrated
7:
Step Five in Nerd Recovery is “on your honor, spend two years without touching a computer”
6:
Still waiting for the next Star Wars installment
5:
Still upset over that last lame Star Wars installment
4:
Too busy defending myself against viruses, spam, adware, and forwards
3:
But the computer said “I LOVE YOU” right before all my friends got mad at me
2:
I discovered “virtual me” is still not interesting

You Know You’re a Homeschool Mom When…
Posted on April 19th, 2002 No comments- You ask for a copier instead of a diamond bracelet for a wedding anniversary gift… and you get it.
- A potholder doubles as a bookmark in a pinch.
- Your kids think that reading history is best accomplished while lying on the floor with their head resting on the side of their patient dog.
- Your husband comes home from work and can tell how the science experiment went just by looking at the house.
- The only debate about the school lunch program is whose turn it is to cook.
- Your formal dining room now has a computer, copy machine, and many bookshelves and there are posters and maps all over the walls.
- You have meal worms growing in a container… on purpose.
- If you get caught talking to yourself you can claim you are having a PTA meeting.
- Talking out loud to yourself is a parent/teacher conference.
- You take off for a teacher in service day because the principal needs clean underwear.
- You step on math manipulatives on your way to the bathroom.
- The teacher gets to kiss the principal in the faculty lounge… and no one gossips.
- Your kids think of the neighbors’ kids are “government school inmates”.
- You live in a one-room schoolroom.

Pray for America! Pray for our world!
Posted on April 1st, 2002 No commentsThe world is changing! What was once a whispered threat is now a daily reality. The World Trade Center is now “ground zero.” Scores dead in Palestine daily. Missionaries held hostage. Grieving families. Violence in every corner. Missing children.
Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). In a matter of hours, Jesus would show His followers how He was to overcome: through the cross, death, burial. All that we fear, He faced in that moment of history we call the crucifixion:
You see it was one man against in the night
Taking on a multitude that had left Him high and dry
No candle burning vigil could light the way
Darkness hit the ground like a fallen satellite
He wrestled until morning with human souls and dark angels
And there He finished His work
On the third day.
(“Alas My Love…,” from dc Talk’s Jesus Freak CD)On the third day, the tomb where Jesus was laid was empty. The heavenly messenger proclaimed, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. “He is not here; He has risen, just as He said” (Matthew 28:5,6). He faced it all and overcame, triumphant over the “human souls and dark angels,” over death and sin.
His resurrection is celebrated every Sunday by believers all over the world. Jesus extends to those who trust in Him an overcoming hope, a peace that passes all understanding, an undying relationship purchased by His own sacrifice.
Pray for America. Pray for the world. Pray that all would know personally that Jesus has overcome it all.
